Tokyo police on patrol for dangerous bike riders
Bicycles have been popular for some time, with people becoming increasingly health conscious and interested in saving energy.
A large number of commuters have also jumped on bicycles since they were stranded on their way home when the March 11 disaster paralyzed transportation systems in the capital.
Bicycle accidents on the way to the workplace or school totaled 2,716 in Tokyo between the Great East Japan Earthquake and the end of August, up 48 from the same period a year ago.
The Tokyo metropolitan government and the Metropolitan Police Department plan to set up bicycle zones on highways across the capital from next fiscal year.
