What's going on in Japan? (No.20)
Canon Inc. is developing a device that will automatically recharge cameras without a cable connection. A prototype of the "Cross Media Station," produced in May, can recharge up to three cameras or camcorders simultaneously, using a coil that transmits power via magnetic fields to the cameras. In principle, the technology could also be used to charge mobile phones, music players and other devices. Development of the Cross Media Station began about five years ago, but Canon is still grappling mass production issues. No commercial release date has been set.
