What's going on in Japan? (No.22)
-sumo scandal seen.- When push came to shove, the directors of the Japan Sumo Association had little choice. Bowing to one of the biggest scandal's in the sport's history, they canceled the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament at an emergency meeting Sunday. It is the first time a grand sumo tournament has been stopped because of alleged misconduct by sumo wrestlers, in this case match-fixing. The emergency meeting Sunday decided to hand out disciplinary measures only when the investigation of all 14 individuals is completed. Some JSA directors called for measures to be taken against the three who had admitted to bout-fixing, but others said such action would make the investigation more difficult because those disciplined might choose not to respond to further questions.
