What's going on in Japan? (No.30)
New Hankyu department store focuses on men's fashion.
Tokyo's tony Ginza district has a new spin on what will sell, at least as far as the Hankyu department store is concerned.
The posh shopping district is better known for catering to the shopping impulses of women, but Hankyu department store's renovated outlet, Hankyu Men's Tokyo, is bucking the trend by focusing exclusively on the other sex.
The store opened Oct. 15.
Located in the Yurakucho district, a gateway to the Ginza, Hankyu men's carries a large collection of brand-name clothes and sundry goods.
The store targets annual sales for 12 billion yen ($155.6 million), almost equivalent to men's suit sales at all Ginza department stores.
"Ginza has become a town for young women and tourists," said Hajime Takeda, an executive officer at Hankyu Hanshin Department Stores Inc. "We will create space where men can spend time enjoying themselves."
